Cat Accessories for the Modern Minimalist
I did hours and hours of research before getting a ragdoll, and subsequently, hours looking for cat accessories that didn't totally suck. Let's be real: 99% of cat products are cheap, brightly coloured, and tacky. So as a new cat owner, and a minimalist with a modern aesthetic, I was on the hunt for products that were: well-made, well-designed, and actually functional. It's surprisingly harder to find than you'd think. Which is why I'm sharing my list here, with you! Including a mini product review, ratings, and where to buy it. Here are the must-have cat accessories for the modern minimalist:
1. Poopoopeedo Litter Box
Litter boxes suck. The design sucks. Cleaning them sucks. They smell. It's every cat owner's least favourite thing about being a cat owner. Except it doesn't have to be. The #1 thing I wanted before getting a kitten was a modern looking litter box that didn't look like a litter box. My boyfriend and I share a relatively small 1-bedroom apartment, and didn't really have any nooks or crannies (or basements, or laundry closets) to put the litter box. So I was adamant about finding something that would fit with the aesthetic of our small interior.
The Poopoopeedo by SinDesign is the ultimate litter box for modern minimalists. It comes in multiple colours (but I wanted to stick with simple white) and is super easy to put together (the top & bottom simply click together). I describe it as the "egg" litter box, because that's what it looks like. Underneath the top half of the "egg" is a small scent neutralizing packet (which you can replace) and a clip/hook for your scooper, so that it's nicely hidden and out of the way. The top half also has a paw print cut-out, which you can hold when lifting to remove litter.
The actual product is bigger than I expected (which is good, because Rose still has a lot of growing to do!). The overall design is both functional, and cool to look at - so much so that you don't have to hide it! So if you live in a small space, or have a really minimal aesthetic, it's the perfect solution to the shitty litter box dilemma.
Overall rating: 9.5/10 - slightly on the pricey side (relative to other litter boxes) but completely worth it
2. Magisso Cat Bowl
I started working with Magisso a couple months ago for a *special project* launching this summer (more on that later...). I found them on Instagram, and instantly fell in love with their super sleek, functional, modern designs - but had no idea they also had pet products! When I got Rose (as most new cat owners do) I told everyone. Yes - that includes the random work colleagues across the world in Finland. They told me they were launching some new cat bowls, and were kind enough to send one for Rose!
As with everything, Magisso's products are designed with intention. They're modern and functional. This cat bowl can be used for either food or water; the three-dimensional fish in the middle of the bowl is designed for "slow-eating" to help prevent over-eating and indigestion issues. As a water bowl, it's even more innovative: made of exclusive cooling ceramics, it's designed to keep your cat's water cool and refreshed all day. Simply soak the bowl in cold tap water for 60 seconds, and the bowl (and its contents) will stay cool for up to 6 hours!
Rose is still a kitten and hasn't had any food issues, but is picky with water. Ever since we started using the cooling bowl, she's never complained! Especially now that summer is rolling in and our apartment is getting warmer, she loves having a refreshing cool drink available to her all day. And I love that it's so easy to use - and there is no messy condensation from the cooling. It's even dishwasher safe.
Plus - you can use chalk to personalize the bowl (like if you have multiple pets!).
Overall rating - 10/10 - brilliant and innovate design, literally no complaints.
3. Wool Cat Cave
I wanted to get a really cute cat bed for Rose because, naive as I was, I thought she would actually sleep in it (and not with us on the bed....). I wanted something neutral, simple, and well-made - surprisingly hard to find at pet stores and online. When I came across this Wool Cat Cave, I fell in love!
It's handmade of 100% wool, making it incredibly durable, warm and cozy. The simple, modern design makes it easy to place in any room, beside any furniture, and have it look like it belongs. One of the first things I noticed upon receiving it is how well-made it feels. The wool is thick, and the overall product feels like it will last a long time.
Rose claimed the cat cave as her territory as soon as we took it out of the box. She started playing in it, napping on it, and even storing some of her favourite toys inside it (no humans allowed to steal them!). To my dismay, she never sleeps in the cave. She sleeps about everywhere else - in bed with us at night, on the couch in the day, on the rug when I'm working, on my lap when I'm watching TV... but never in her cave. However she does LOVE to play in it - and on top of it, flattening it out like a little bed.
Overall rating: 8/10 - super well made, an expensive "play cave"
4. Soft Bristle Wood Handle Brush
I have mild cat allergies, and by getting a long-haired cat, I knew that I'd have to brush her daily in order to reduce shedding. It doesn't hurt that I'm obsessed with my cat and love cuddling/touching/brushing/smothering her 24/7. Thank God I work from home (how do other people spend so much time away from their pets?!).
Most of the cat brushes I found at pet stores were really bright, colorful and tacky looking. They were very obviously "pet products". I also wanted to get a brush with soft bristles and much gentler than other brushes, where she's still a kitten. This Coastal Safari Soft Bristle Wood Handle Brush caught my eye for two reasons:
1) I love the look of the wood handle. Super minimal, and natural.
2) The price!!! For $6.21 I could buy a latte... or a cat brush with free shipping to my door (thanks Amazon Prime!).
Rose is slowly getting used to being brush; she was really playful with the brush at first, and now she'll let me brush her when she's sleepy (which is 75% of the time).
Overall rating: 9/10 - best bang for your buck, nothing extraordinarily ground-breaking
5. Mr. Peanut's Travel Tote
I travel - a lot. And while I don't anticipate taking Rose on flights any time soon, I did want to get a cute carrier for driving to play dates & vet visits. Maybe, eventually, she'll come home to Alberta with me to visit the fam!
Mr. Peanut's Travel Tote is a low-key carrier that doesn't scream "a pet is in here!" but doesn't pretend to be something it's not. There's a lot of little details that really make the design great - from locking zippers, to exterior pockets and a removable, washable fleece bedding. One of the reasons I bought it was because I love the unisex design - and the minimal design won't go out of style any time soon.
I was slightly skeptical about the quality ordering from a random distributor on Amazon, but was happily impressed. It's lightweight, but not flimsy. Rose loves the fleece bedding inside - so much so that she sleeps there during the day sometimes. Even though she hates riding in the car (howling and crying from the moment the engine starts) she has no problem being in her carrier at home or otherwise, because it's so comfy.
Overall rating - 8.5/10 - lots of functional details, but it has "Mr. Peanut's" embroidered on the side, which is a minor detail I wish wasn't there.
6. PetFusion Cat Scratcher
Cat scratchers are one of my least favourite products on the market, but also one of the most necessary. Most scratching poles look super cheap. I put off buying something because I actually hated all of the scratchers I saw. So I did some digging, and found PetFusion - modern pet products made for your home.
The PetFusion Cat Scratcher caught my eye because of its unique design - laying horizontally with subtle curves, it acts as both a cat scratcher and a place to lounge. The PetFusion Cat Scratcher is made of recycled cardboard and non-toxic corn starch glue. It's thoughtfully designed as "reversible" so you can flip it over, for a prolonged life.
I love the neutral colours, and the use of recycled materials. Cats love cardboard, so Rose has been naturally attracted and intrigued by it. At first, she preferred to lounge on it - and continued to scratch our couches and everything EXCEPT the scratcher. But as a kitten, we've been slowly teaching her to use the scratcher any time she starts scratching elsewhere. It didn't take her long to figure out - and scratching the corrugated cardboard is super satisfying for her.
Overall rating - 9/10 - love the minimal design, wish it was slightly bigger (I got the largest size it comes in, but know she has a lot of growing left to do)
7. BONUS: Luxe Off-White Area Rug
Confession: I didn't actually buy this rug for Rose. I bought it to put under my desk in our new apartment. But I think Rose loves it more than I do. It's the only thing in the house that's fluffier than her! She will wrestle and play with the rug like it's another kitten, and snooze nuzzled up in the rug fur all day. When the sunlight hits the rug, I think she's in heaven. It's officially become the cat's rug.
So, if you're looking for a cute rug for your space, but also want something that will double as a daytime cat bed, look no further than the Hudson Off-White Area Rug.
Overall rating - 10/10 - I love it, Rose loves it more
